Law Clerk to the Honorable E. Gordan West, United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana (1976-77)
During his thirty five year legal career, Frilot partner James H. Brown, Jr. has engaged in a wide ranging trial and appellate practice in diverse areas of the law, including maritime personal injury, collisions, business disputes, toxic torts, environmental claims, product liability, and premises liability. Mr. Brown has extensive experience in handling claims for exposure to asbestos and other potentially harmful substances.
Additionally, Mr. Brown has successfully litigated both jury and non-jury cases involving the defense of police officers and municipalities in state and federal courts in Louisiana. He has successfully defended a wide variety of lawsuits, including claims involving personal injury, wrongful death, alleged violations of civil rights under 42 U.S.C. 1983, and the defense of automobile liability cases on behalf of the Kenner Police Department.
Mr. Brown teaches an annual course in police liability at the Kenner Police Academy where he instructs incoming police officers on the potential legal ramifications of their actions under both state and federal law. He has also been a speaker on issues involving police litigation, including the defense of excessive force claims and the use of force in police work.
In addition to his police work, Mr. Brown has successfully represented agricultural giant Monsanto in lawsuits involving alleged toxic exposures throughout the South and in Puerto Rico. His work handling asbestos litigation in the law firmís Mass Tort and Class Actions Practice Area has involved the successful handling of claims in both the state and federal courts in Louisiana and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
A graduate of the Louisiana State University Law Center, Mr. Brown is a member of the American Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the New Orleans Bar Association, and the Defense Research Institute. He has attained a Martindale-Hubbell AV Rating. He served as a law clerk for the Honorable E. Gordon West in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana from 1976 to 1977.
